Artist Statement- Jane Doe Series
The Jane Doe series is a response to the enduring violence against women—violence that spans centuries, continents, and civilizations. From prehistoric burial sites to the present war in Ukraine, women’s bodies have too often been used as battlegrounds, their stories erased, renamed, or never told at all.
This series is not bound to a single moment in time. Instead, it is an ongoing meditation on the anonymity forced upon women who have endured rape, abuse, and systemic violence—particularly in the context of war. The name Jane Doe becomes a symbol for all those who were never given one.
Using steel, found materials, and constructed forms, I create figures that bear the marks of trauma, resilience, and witness. These works are not literal depictions, but layered vessels—echoes of ancient suffering and modern brutality. Each piece holds space for a woman whose history was silenced, whose body was politicized, and whose life was never meant to be a casualty.
By placing these figures together in one evolving series, I ask: What does it mean to be forgotten? What does it take to remember?
